Metallics on Trend

Up on the blog today, we are discussing the metallic trend in Interior Design.  An ensemble of metal accents, no more than a mix of two to three different metal accents, used throughout a room is in, and will always be a timeless and tasteful way to create balance and definition in an environment. For example, brass, gold or nickel accents mix well with either oil-rubbed bronze or aged iron accents. Metals like silver and pewter can mix well with bronze and black brown metals. It’s all about moderation and context. So, scroll down for your metallic inspiration for each area of your home.

Kitchen

Let's start in the kitchen, the heart of the home!  This is the space where most people gather and spend time together,  besides for the entertainment space, so you can make a big impact here.  One way metallics can be included into the kitchen is by adding it to your worktop. Stainless steel has recently moved from the commercial sphere into our homes. In addition to its hygienic properties, stainless steel is also easy to clean and heat resistant. If you love the industrial aesthetic, adding a stainless steel worktop is an easy win. If you don’t want all of your worktops to be stainless steel, consider adding it just to the area where you prep your food.

Trying to decide on the mood you want to strike in the kitchen?  Do it with pendant lighting over an island or breakfast bar. For those who want an understated look, consider a pendant light fixture that has a matte sheen outside but a metallic inside. It’s an unexpected detail that will add a bit of shine to the kitchen.

If you don’t necessarily want to showcase the metallic trend and want to be more subtle with it,  a good way to go is to purchase a dish set with the trend.  Purchasing plates and flatware with a brass or even a chrome look, will surprise your dinner guests and will give an elegant look.

Living Room

It’s a known fact that people spend a lot of time in living rooms, either relaxing or entertaining, so bringing in metallics into this space really help to show off the trend.  Feature walls are a great way to create a focal point in a room and to experiment with color, pattern, and finish. Wallpapers with metallic finishes, make for a great feature wall because of their reflective nature, which bounces off light and catches the eye.

Another great way to add the trend into your living room space would be to incorporate an accented coffee table. Additionally, by adding accents on the coffee table will pull the attention to the table and with ultimately brighten up the room. Add metallic accessories to the already metallic table, mixing different metals to give a great contrast for a luxury feel.

Bathroom

Get on the copper trend.  One of the reasons that copper became so popular as a plumbing material is because of its anti-bacterial nature. Since plumbing usually leads to ingestion at some point, it’s important to make sure that what the plumbing carries is as healthy as possible. Now you can take it one step further with copper plumbing fixtures and other modern copper items that will make your bathroom a unique sanctuary.  Copper offers a look like no other material. The color of the material alone stands out and speaks to the quality of the home, but when you combine modern techniques with skilled craftsman, you can create a vintage look with everything from copper bathroom sinks and copper plumbing fixtures to a copper bathtub in your vintage or contemporary bathroom.  We lean toward the contemporary end and love the look of this shower.

Don't underestimate the wow factor of your accessory pieces.  Especially the mirror.  It is a great way to add the perfect touch without overdoing it, especially if you’ve just renovated your bathroom and don’t want to spend any more money!

Bedroom

For a few years, cool tones of silver, chrome, and pewter were the interior design stars. The pendulum has swung in the opposite direction and warm metals are having their time in the spotlight.  Gold and copper are especially hot, but you don’t want to overdose on the metallic trend. A little bit of shine goes a long way, especially in the bedroom.  Feel free to mix metals, but limit them to just a few accents throughout the room. Go with a bedside lamp or ceiling fixture, curtain rods or picture frames, furniture trim or collectibles.

Another subtle way of accessorizing metallics into your bedroom is with throw pillows! Throw pillows are one of my favorite staple pieces in any room because you can always interchange them for the season or even interior design styles! My bedding is black and white so whenever I’m looking for a little bit of change, the first thing that I do is switch out my throw pillows and automatically my room has a new feel to it.

If you want to make a huge impace in your bedroom, a nice statement wallpaper will really do the trick! Selecting one part of your wall and contrasting it with the rest will give your room a nice shine along with a beautiful pattern. Some metallic wallpapers I’ve seen have a neutral base with lined details showcasing the beautiful metals, which work perfectly as it’s not over powering.
