Greek Chic Interiors

Have the Greek islands on your bucket list to visit? From the crystal clear blue waters, to the white stone buildings in the Cyclades, Greece is hands down one of the most beautiful countries. Besides the beautiful scenery, Greek architecture and Interior Design will also take your breath away. Some are fortunate enough to visit Greece (or even be Greek, like me, although I was born here in Philadelphia) but, for those who don’t have the luxury, the perfect alternative is to bring the Greek Interior Design style into your own home, office or hotel.

Colors

With Greece, the two colors that instantly come to mind are: blue and white. The different shades of cobalt blue and white are an emblem of Greek culture, and has worked itself into the modern trends of interiors today.  If you're looking to create a traditional yet modern Greek-inspired style of interior design, it’s important to use a natural color palette and materials while drawing on the key characteristics of the style.  To add a bit more color to the scheme, draw from more of the colors found in the landscape of Greece. Green, purple, and red tones work best as they’re inspired by the vegetation and wildflowers native to Greece.

Traditionally, Greek Interior Design has many curves and arches. Curved furniture pieces are a hot trend now, especially in the homes of the cyclades, which can also be incorporated into your own home. Having a curved element in your space, made out of natural materials will for sure give a luxurious and Santorini inspired aesthetic to your home.

Another huge part of the Greek aesthetic is wood. Wood can be used for flooring or even tables however, going back to the idea of using natural materials is very important for the islanders. The wood offers a much needed natural material in a very white space, which ultimately pulls attention to that specific space. This is your chance to splurge on that special wood accessory because it will be the “center of attention.”

Something that complements the wooden aspects of the Greek homes are, textured or even woven patterned materials.  Greece also prides itself on their olives, Elements that are related to an olive tree are a must in any Grecian inspired interior. A fantastic and simple way to accomplish this look is by adding it to your home decor. For example, antique oil jars will look beautiful whether you decide to place them indoors or out — and depending on your personal taste, they can be used as a unique plant pot or left empty.

Fabrics

When it comes to fabrics, select those that are lightweight, sheer and in neutral colors as these are the best choices for a Grecian design. Treating your windows to light drapes will instill the room with a sense of elegance and airiness that is precisely what you are aiming for. During the summer Greece gets really hot, so by using light weight fabrics, it not only provides a specific design style but also provides the light-weight factor needed to keep the home cool.

If your walls are starting to feel a bit bare, including a beautiful tapestry with blue and white colors is another way to include that Grecian appeal.

Flooring

We previously discussed wood  flooring in the Greek Interior, but stone is actually one of the most popular. Limestone and marble are the most commonly used in Greece and bringing in these materials will really accentuate that Grecian look. Stone flooring provides a sense of elegance with a very clean and natural look.
