Up on the blog this week, I am addressing the antidote to Winter Doldrums. Winter can often be associated with cold, dark days and a gloomy atmosphere that can have a negative impact on your mood, especially if you live in Philadelphia. So perhaps you should turn to your interiors to brighten up your days, rather than what's outside your window. Designing your home using certain colors, styles and furniture can really make a difference in terms of your mood.
Adding a hot hue within a neutral setting is one of the easiest ways to inject warmth and energy into a space, so it's an excellent place to start if you're looking to combat the blues in the winter months. Paint a room or even just a wall a color that radiates happiness to you. Color psychology suggests that a majority of people are cheered by yellow, brighter blues and greens, and even orange and red, but the palette is up to you! We are in full swing Winter here in Philadelphia so warm it up!
This season, bold floral wallpapers are sprouting up all over the interior design world and flowers are a real mood-enhancer. Bring some flower power home and say 'bye-bye' to winter blues! You can emphasize this look by adding vases of flowers throughout the interior of your home. This provides instant cheer and brings nature to you, even when it is too cold to go outside. The simple addition of a house plant can also make you feel calmer, more optimistic and can reduce stress and fatigue according to the Journal of Environmental Psychology. Plus, live plants in your home can also remove toxins because they help to clean and purify the indoor air.
One good way to lift the mood in a room is to include mirrors, lamps and metallic pieces. Items that bounce light are instant mood lifters. Mirrors can also multiply the impact of better lighting in your room, so be sure to hang mirrors throughout your home to help reflect the restorative rays beaming from your light fixtures. 'Metallic accents, lamps and mirrors will work double duty, bringing a gleaming glimmer and a flash of color at the same time.
Cushions, rugs, throws and bedding are great for making your the interior of your home feel cozy and warm during the winter months. Not only do they look great, but they are affordable and comfortable too. Add some bright and bold throw pillows to your sofa, or buy a bright new bedspread to liven things up.
